What is the optical and digital zoom for Canon 450D with the Zoom Lens EF-S 55-250mm?
optical zoom on a dSLR lens doesn’t mean the same thing as optical zoom on a compact camera. It’s used in compacts because all compacts have roughly the same focal length on the short end (wide angle) dSLRs have lenses that can vary wildly on the short end, so even if someone tells you that this lens or that dSLR lens is 4.5x or 6x, it’s not anything like 4.5x or 6x on a compact. So the best thing to do when going to a dSLR is to learn what the focal length means in millimeters and ditch the X factor for zoom.
