Used Photography Backgrounds
Monday, March 29th, 2010

If you like to make digital art from pictures you take with your camera, you may have come across a problem with changing the background for a desired subject. The difficulty arises when the edges of the main subject are jagged, furry or finely convoluted.
For instance, if you magic mask a white sky in order to replace it with a blue sky, the usual method is to choose a light blue and a dark blue color and using the graduating tool, replace the white sky with the blue colors. This sometimes works with smooth edges, say buildings or mountains, but when a tree with leaves forms the edge, the blue may not come all the way up to the leaves, leaving a white line around each leaf.
One quick method to fill these lines is to enlarge the area to four or five hundred percent and magic masking the white areas. Then you just have to fill the white areas all at once with the appropriate blue sky color. Any missed white sky areas can be filled in by choosing a brush and limiting the effect to darkening only. The brush color can be ink dropped from an adjacent area. If this doesn’t work, change the limiter to lighten only. This way, the leaves are left untouched and any white areas will be filled in. This same method works with hair, fur and any difficult edge. This method works well when creating clouds in a cloudless sky. The finished clouds can also be worked with the smear brush set at a low percentage.
The same methods can be used when transferring a subject made into an object by roughly drawing a mask around the subject, creating an object and dragging the object to the proper position in your new picture. Then using the clone brush set to lighten or darken only, extend the areas next to the subject so that the edges are clean and invisible. Of course you must work at two hundred per cent enlarged in order to do a good job. A fifty per cent transparency makes it easier. When cloning, always stroke in the direction of the line to be extended.
